Dream Scenario - Review

You've Been on My Mind Recently.

3 / 5

The Guardians of the Galaxy team line up

Directed by Kristoffer Borgli.

Paul Matthews finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams.

It's always fun to see how Nicholas Cage continues to out-weird himself and he does a pretty successful job as he infiltrates everyone's dreams in the mind-bending Dream Scenario.

I didn’t realise until the credits rolled that this was directed by Kristoffer Borgli who created the fantastic Norwegian comedy Sick of Myself. He seems drawn to dark comedies with destructive undertones and there is no exception to his English-language debut.

Dream Scenario takes an interesting premise and leans heavily into the real life ramifications holding a mirror up to today's society and the modern interpretation of a celebrity. It's a less direct comedy than the marketing made it seem, in fact, the further you get, the more it becomes a tragedy.

Nicholas Cage is fantastic in the lead as he struggles to comprehend this unwanted attention and how, for better or for worse, it will change the course of his life forever. As interesting as the premise is, it does, unfortunately, fizzle out quite quickly as it soon becomes obvious that this tragic story has no satisfying end.
