Fresh - Review (Sundance Film Festival 2022)

I Don't Want You Leaving Here Thinking I'm a Weirdo. 4 / 5

Directed by Mimi Cave.

Frustrated by scrolling dating apps only to end up on lame, tedious dates, Noa takes a chance by giving her number to the awkwardly charming Steve after a produce-section meet-cute at the grocery store.

Luring you in with romantic tropes, Fresh makes sure you are firmly in your comfort zone, and then after a warm first act… the film finally begins.

Mimi Cave's feature debut is a bold and seductive piece that takes the awkwardness of dating to a dark and twisted place. Daisy Edgar-Jones is great in the lead but Sebastian Stan steals the show channeling his inner American Psycho with a maniacally hungry performance where he really is allowed to shine.

Though it loses steam as it moves into its final act, this cynically charming film revels in its own absurd dark humour that isn't afraid to shock even if ultimately it doesn't have much to say. Deserves to be seen knowing as little as you can to be enjoyed to its fullest.
