All of a Sudden 2026 film review

All of a Sudden is directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and co-written with Léa Le Dimna.

Starring Virginie Efira, Tao Okamoto, Kyōzō Nagatsuka & Kodai Kurosaki.

Director of a care facility for the elderly, Marie-Lou strives to introduce an innovative care philosophy based on listening and respecting residents’ dignity, despite resistance from part of her staff. Her encounter with Mari, a Japanese theater director battling cancer, will profoundly reshape her path. By forming a deep, supportive friendship, the two women join forces in a shared struggle to make the impossible possible.

Set in a French care facility in turmoil,Ryusuke Hamaguchi reflects on life, death and capitalism in this sprawling character drama.

Virginia Efira and Tao Okamoto become unlikely friends through their shared experiences where, despite bleak circumstances, they find hope in each other that was severely missing. A surprising comfort of a movie, though it may overstay its welcome with a lengthy runtime, you don't mind staying in this world for a while longer. Journeying from Paris to Kyoto, the film reflects on what it means to be alive, what legacy we want to leave behind and how capitalism will continue to expand, with nowhere left to escape to. Such fun!

Our verdict: 3 out of 5 stars.
