Rita, an underrated lawyer working for a large law firm more interested in getting criminals out of jail than bringing them to justice, is hired by the leader of a criminal organisation.

If you know nothing about Emilia Pérez, I cannot recommend how going into this blind makes for a significantly better experience.

A gritty look at Mexico's criminal underworld that goes in some unexpected directions and takes some huge swings… with a fair few of them missing. By attempting to tackle so many important social issues at once, it spreads its attention so thin that it doesn't do any of them true justice.

The cast gives it their all with Zoe Saldaña giving a particularly great performance and there are some visually impressive standout sequences but Emilia Pérez gets too carried away in its excitement to try a little bit of everything that it spoils the final product.

Our verdict: 3 out of 5 stars.

Emilia Pérez arrives in select cinemas in the UK on October 25. The film will stream on Netflix on November 13 2024.
