Look Clearly at What's Going on Around You.
4 / 5
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
A man seeks to break free from his predetermined path, a cop questions his wife's demeanor after her return from a supposed drowning, and a woman searches for an extraordinary individual prophesied to become a renowned spiritual guide.
A fantastic example of the "one of them, one for me" system that select directors can get with studios - after Yorgos Lanthimos' Poor Things swept awards season, hot on its tale was the eccentric Kinds of Kindness.
Split up into three short loosely connected films, this brings a strong cast to play diverse but unconventional characters as each story aims to push the boundaries of social norms and expectations.
It's a welcome return to Lanthimos' Dogtooth, Lobster and Sacred Deer roots where traditional storytelling, direction and dialogue are thrown out of the window with the clear aim of challenging the audience with off-kilter storytelling and purposely testing imagery.
It is a demanding watch, even for the most loyal fans, with an extended runtime across the three stories but I was in awe of what Lanthimos was able to get away with and produce on such a high-end level.
