La Cocina - Review (London Film Festival 2024)

I Have To Cry in English.

Raúl Briones and Rooney Mara in Alonso Ruizpalacios' La Cocina.

La Cocina is directed & written by Alonso Ruizpalacios. Starring Raúl Briones, Rooney Mara & Anna Díaz.

It is the lunchtime rush at The Grill, a New York tourist trap that serves thousands of customers on a regular Friday like today. Money has gone missing from the till and all the workers are being questioned.

Alonso Ruizpalacios' spectacular kitchen drama explores the balance of a stressful environment and how the weaving relationships and experiences only proceed to add fuel to the fire.

The bustle and chaos of a New York kitchen is the perfect example of modern America's melting pot of cultures. La Cocina explores this with consistently claustrophobic framing and extended takes that only add to the intensity of the story.

Raúl Briones gives an astonishingly vulnerable performance full of passionate rage as tensions begin to boil over in this delectable start to 2024's London Film Festival.

Our verdict: 4 out of 5 stars.

La Cocina releases in UK Cinemas 26th December 2024.
