Lee Cronin takes the Universal monster and strips it back to its primal horror roots, delivering a film that has more in common with body horror than adventure cinema. The practical effects are extraordinary and Cronin's direction is confident and viscerally effective.
A proper horror film that understands what makes the genre work: dread, atmosphere and the gradual erosion of safety. One of the better monster movies in years.
