Go Where Love is.

Review written by Jack Aling

Materialists 2025 film review
Materialists is directed and written by Celine Song.

A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.

A mature misdirection of the traditional romantic comedy, Materialists looks at love through a clinical lens.

Dating can be transactional. Like an algorithm with either a fixed successful or a failed outcome. But it doesn't account for the unexpected - the people that come into our lives away from the apps, the agencies and the setups.

Materialists explores this but never quite decides which side of the fight it wants to be on. Despite a charismatic cast and strong direction from Celine Song, it's tonally at war with itself, which weakens the impact of the social commentary as well as the hopeful romance.

Our verdict: 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Materialists arrives in UK Cinemas August 13th 2025
