Paper Tiger is directed and written by James Gray.
Starring Miles Teller, Adam Driver & Scarlett Johansson.
Two brothers become entangled in a scheme that turns out to be too good to be true. As they try to navigate their way through the dangerous world of the Russian mafia, family bonds begin to fray with life-altering consequences.
The New York crime drama is a classic genre for a reason. There's a certain grit and spirit that pulls you into the criminal underworld that has produced some of the finest crime films ever made. A grit that Paper Tiger is lacking.
It may have the accents and charm, strong direction by James Gray, and a remarkable cast, but the script is so unfocused that it makes it hard to get fully invested. In an attempt to give Teller, Johannson and Driver their share of screen time, the film tears itself in three distinctly different directions, which creates a fragmented and unfulfilling family drama.
