Parenthood is Full of Choices.
Review written by Jack Aling
The Assessment is directed by Fleur Fortuné and written by Neil Garfath-Cox, Dave Thomas & John Donnelly. Starring Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander & Himesh Patel.
A successful couple faces scrutiny by an evaluator over seven days to determine their fitness for childbearing.
A minimal dystopian sci-fi lays the groundwork for an unsettling exploration of parenthood when a couple are assessed to see if they are suitable for raising children.
The Assessment is beautifully directed by Fleur Fortuné with a stunning looking debut, helped by the incredible set design. The premise and worldbuilding is an intriguing one. Still, as the story reveals itself in the second half, it expands into something far more interesting which I wish the film's narrative dedicated more time to.
Supported by a fantastic core cast, Alicia Vikander in particular gets to really throw herself into an alluring role as the assessor.
A great use of low concept science fiction that left me wanting more.
Our verdict: 3.5 out of 5 stars.
The Assessment releases in 2025.
