A 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain travels to Provincetown and stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen, setting off a summer that will shape the course of his life.
Without sounding like every other white guy in his late twenties, Anthony Bourdain is a real hero of mine.
His ability to reinvent himself, master many crafts, as well as his ability to explore and connect with the world at a later age leaves me with overwhelming hope for the future.
In Tony, all of that is to come. We meet a teenage Bourdain looking to invent himself for the first time. Is he a writer? Is he a storyteller? Is he a chef? Or is he a mix of it all?
Dominic Sessa was born to play Bourdain. From the long hair to his unique brand of scrawniness, he embodies an early unapologetic soul as he tries on different personalities in search of the perfect fit. Bouncing off a fantastic supporting cast, Antonio Banderas is a standout as his stern culinary mentor.
Matt Johnson and team decide to focus on one summer, rather than the typical biopic route, telling you everything you need to know about Anthony Bourdain across a few sun-soaked months in Cape Cod. His disruptive brand of personality shines through as he defies his masters in an attempt to forge his own path despite every (often self-made) barrier that comes his way.
An escapist summer getaway that finds energy in passion that feels as curious and free as Bourdain embodied so well.
