Bros - Review (London Film Festival 2022)

Hey, What's Up? 4 / 5

Directed by Nicholas Stoller.

Two men with commitment problems attempt a relationship.

Releases in UK Cinemas: October 28th 2022

A much needed dose of fresh air in a cinematic season where there's so much doom and gloom.

Bros has a style of comedy that I feel has been lost over the past few years where the jokes come flying at you so often that it doesn't matter if one doesn’t hit because here are five more heading your way. It’s a studio comedy that is confident in itself, its style, and its personality and it is refreshing to see something so full of life on the big screen.

Billy Eichner leads and co-writes this romantic comedy with his usual 'mile a minute' cynic energy but what surprised me is how much it leans into the rom-com tropes and cliches. A lot of modern comedies are obsessed with reinventing the wheel where all Bros is focused on is giving a mainstream old-fashioned romantic comedy to an audience where representation is wildly lacking.

It's unapologetic in its delivery and though a few of its references will age quickly and not every joke is as funny as it thinks it is - it breaks new ground in an unexpected way and is a unifying reminder of how great it is to laugh uncontrollably with strangers in the dark.
