Causeway - Review (London Film Festival 2022)

The Risk is Mine. 3 / 5

Directed by Lila Neugebauer.

A US soldier suffers a traumatic brain injury while fighting in Afghanistan and struggles to adjust to life back home.

Available worldwide on AppleTV+ on November 4th 2022.

Jennifer Lawrence continues her return to acting with a subtle and tragic character piece in Causeway. After suffering a brain injury and having to return home from Afghanistan, Lawrence's Lynsey is forced to reassess her life and begin to build anew.

This slow paced homecoming film is a tough watch as Lynsey rehabilitates herself both physically and mentally adjusting to her new lifestyle whilst being forced to reflect on the decisions that brought her to this point. Both Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry give beautiful performances as two exhausted souls looking to rebuild, both bonded by their collective traumas.

There is a sombre tone that weaves throughout every element of Causeway, but through the heavy subject matter and tormented characters, there is a sense of hope. A sense that through perseverance there can be light at the end of the tunnel, regardless of how unreachable it might seem.
