Thunderbolts* is directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson & Joanna Calo.
Starring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell & Hannah John-Kamen.

After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap, seven disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel...

Talks of Marvel's internal overhaul after a tough few post-pandemic years have been thrown around for a while, with recent offerings like Captain America: Brave New World giving little proof of any progress. But Thunderbolts*, show that Marvel may still have some fight left in them.

Mature and significant, Thunderbolts* rounds up a misfit group of supporting characters from across the MCU, bringing them together for a story of personal acceptance and connection that will have a significant impact as we approach The New Avengers movie next year.

Florence Pugh leads a charismatic ensemble, each with an inescapable past which allows the film to explore meaningful themes. These bring us closer as an audience and allow space for much-needed character development that Marvel either hasn't previously allowed space for or found necessary.

It's hard to call a film with super-powered individuals "grounded", but by using these powers as an physical expression of mental health struggles, depression and bipolar disorder - especially through Lewis Pullman's fantastic portrayal as Bob - it shows an intriguing future for the type of stories the 'superhero genre' is willing to explore as it evolves and finds its new place on the cinematic landscape.

A breath of fresh air narratively and visually, Thunderbolts* delivers a heartfelt story with engaging characters shot in real locations.

Does that sound like the bare minimum? Yes.

But it's a sign that things may be back on the right track with a bold future on the horizon.

Our verdict: 4 out of 5 stars.

Thunderbolts* arrives in UK Cinemas May 1st 2025
