A Minecraft Movie is directed by Jared Hess and written by Chris Galletta, Gavin James, Neil Widener, Hubbel Palmer & Chris Bowman.
Starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Emma Myers & Danielle Brooks.

Four misfits find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.

An intense fever dream of a movie, I wasn't sure what to expect from A Minecraft Movie but I was taken aback by the experience.

The best way I've been able to describe it has been that it's like watching live improv. The audience and the performers are all aware it's a show and often break the rules of the narrative to collectively enjoy the joke. The filmmakers let Jack Black quip, sing and frolic on a green screen, occasionally reminding him to say an item from the video game Minecraft; then they wrote a thin narrative and built a CGI world around him.

There's no other reason why this movie exists in the form it does. I don't understand it. I can't believe I watched it. I can't believe that they will inevitably make a thousand more of these.

Our verdict: 1 out of 5 stars.

A Minecraft Movie arrives in UK Cinemas April 4th 2025
