A Quiet Place: Day One - Review

A New Dawn.

3.5 / 5

The Guardians of the Galaxy team line up

Directed by Michael Sarnoski.

As New York City is invaded by alien creatures who hunt by sound, a woman named Sam fights to survive.

A Quiet Place: Day One teases answers to the mysteriously sound-sensitive creatures as audiences can 'hear how it all began.' But this prequel quickly falls into familiar territory without bringing much more to the table except new faces and locations.

A Quiet Place is only as good as its characters. Moving away from the Abbott family, this instalment follows Sam who attempts to cross New York with her service cat, Frodo. Along their journey, they meet Eric who completes the trio. Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn's performances are by far the highlight of the film, both bringing emotional depth as their uncertainty quickly turns to survival. And of course, a special shout out to Schnitze and Nico the Cats for feline performances of the year.

In the age of theatrical releases vs streaming - I can't help that A Quiet Place: Day One would have made a fantastic anthology series on Paramount+. It's a welcome return to this world, but it's hard to understand why this was the next narrative step after two impressive films building the universe and characters.
