Be Careful With Boys.
3.5 / 5
Directed by Shuchi Talati.
In a strict boarding school nestled in the Himalayas, 16-year-old Mira discovers desire and romance. But her sexual, rebellious awakening is disrupted by her mother who never got to come of age herself.
The relationship between a mother and daughter is tested in the coming of age drama Girls Will Be Girls.
Preeti Panigrahi gives a stunning performance as Mira at the centre of this intimate story. Her emerging sexuality and self-discovery becomes threatened by her mother, a new student and her newly inherited authority at school. How the film chooses to handle these weaving conflicts is oddly relatable while going to uncomfortable and uncertain places.
Subverting your expectations, it uses discomfort as a tool to effectively build tension. Although its pacing holds it back in parts, it does not take away from the impact of this personal story.
