Life is Like a Parody of Your Favourite Song. 4 / 5
Directed by Eric Appel.
Exploring every facet of ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle.
What an absolutely insane and totally accurate look at the life of Weird Al Yankovic.
Weird is a great example of a communal movie - a film that is still great when enjoyed alone but only made better when watching it with others. It follows a similar tone to other satirising biographies like Walk Hard by playing out the craziest scenarios in a focused deadpan manner and you spend a large portion of the film playing 'Spot the Cameo' but that is half the fun.
The final act goes off the rails in the best and most unexpected way and is a film that I can say with the utmost confidence that I had no idea what was coming next. Weird Al Yankovic has made a name for himself through his signature style and I'm glad he got to tell his life story the way only he would have wanted - as a genre flipping icon played surprisingly well by Daniel Radcliffe.
My only complaint is that it didn't go further into his career, instead opting for a more extreme and who knows? Possibly a more accurate finale.
